Inspite of major differences in physical and mental attributes there is one thing common with all humans and it is the general curiosity to know their future and if someone or some methodology claims to relish their thirst then they can not afford to let it go without once examining or at least experiencing it. The same is the case with astrology.
With the years of our expertise gained in this field we are still not in the judgmental position that means there is still something (let us say x) yet to be discovered, evaluated and being experimented.
To begin with the debate we need to know first of all what is the basis of astrology, astrologers argues that it is the many one into relationship between the planets in our solar system and the man ,which is the very cause of astrology or in the words of physics it is the attraction force between the two bodies which is solely responsible. Scientists often counter argues this with the saying that this attraction force is nothing but the gravitational force between them and which is negligible so Fatt = Fgrav but again astrologers hold it is Fatt=kFgrav where k is variable of time and space and this might be the x we were talking about earlier and of which we are still not sure.
To answer the basic question “Is Astrology a Science?” we should first of all have a look
at what is science? And the reliable oxford dictionary defines it as:
“The intellectual and practical activity encompassing the systematic study of the structure
and behavior of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment”.
No body can deny that astrology is not an intellectual activity since it involves n number of rigorous calculations ,permutations and combinations , practical because it is being applied on the human beings in the real world. Yes, It deals with the study of physical and natural entities like heavenly bodies, man, time, space etc. and also it is entirely based on observations and experiments, infact it is being said that all the laws of astrology is derived from experiments by hit n trial method. So…so what?? Astrology fulfills all requirement of being a science then whatz the issue. Where the problem lies? Its not that much simple. The issue lies in the consistency. We often hear that some person predicted some event and that happened indeed but again given a chance he failed so where is the problem, with the man or with his science?
People who do have faith believes in former. They often put like this “A Man can be wrong but a Science can not be”. The main source of western astrology is Indian Astrology and its main source is the ancient holy books, shastras, Vedas etc. and most of them are either lost or difficult to decrypt so we are actually left with less resources to work upon. This is the one of the main reason of the failures.
Also the cumbersome data and mathematics involved in it makes the life of predictor even more difficult. In an astro horoscope of a person there are basically 12 houses and 9 planets so there can be theoretically 12^9 ( in fact less than that ) cases possible apart from their interdependent relationships so how can you expect from someone to go through all this calculations and provide you the result in minutes but the question is how do they do? They do it by using the generality which astrology carries. Thus there are set of thumb rules but you never know when they get failed. These things lead to the misconceptions and false predictions.
Apart from this there are many issues on which common consensus has yet not been achieved like concept of Ayanamasa, concept of lunar nodes, manglik dosh etc. which further add to erroneousness.
In India we have a habit of mixing up things. Astrology is often been mingled with the regional cultures, superstitions and religion which often lead to drastic results and more importantly become a sole reason for numerous dhongis and babas all over country.
We need to make a difference between “shani” bhagwan and planet “saturn”. In 21st century you cannot expect a person to wear white dress in an industry just to please “Shukra” bhagwan .It wont be accepted by updated masses.
This is the modern world and to realize the power of the knowledge provided by our ancestors we need to present them to the people in more scientific way with clearly depicting the logics behind them. Although we are not in a position to explain the reasons for the observations in astrology but if we can observe something which was true , is true or will be true then we can not negate it. Same as thousand years back we didn’t have the reason for formation of curd from milk but only after the discovery of fermentation by Pasteur we could explain that.
One more issue is should we teach our children astrology in science universities, schools?
Vedic Astrology is an asset for us if we are able to interpret it properly else it may prove as a curse. We should convey this clearly to our children. Even it can be taught in arts faculty .Why not? “Art of telling future” whatz wrong? But the most important is the passing on of true and fruitful information to our offsprings.
In the end to answer our basic question Is Astrology a science? I would say it is definitely but only in its ideal case ,only if you can afford to go through all the hectic calculations, only if you got your details like date and time of birth etc. right but certainly not in itz present form.
So I wont mind it calling a “Para Science”.
